What JPG to PNG actually does
This is the conversion people do for compatibility and workflow reasons, not for size: the PNG will be larger than the JPG, usually much larger. The honest mental model is a photocopy analogy. The JPG is a good photocopy of the original scene; converting it to PNG laminates that photocopy so it never degrades again. It does not sharpen it, and it cannot bring back what the first copy dropped.
Where that lamination matters: repeated editing. Every time software re-saves a JPG, the compression runs again and quality erodes; after a few rounds the damage is visible. Convert to PNG once at the start of an editing session and every intermediate save is exact. When you are done, export the final result as JPG or WebP for sharing, ideally with the PNG to JPG converter at quality 85.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No, and any tool that implies otherwise is misleading you. JPG compression permanently discarded some detail when the file was first saved; converting to PNG stores the remaining pixels losslessly but cannot invent what was thrown away. What the conversion buys you is that no FURTHER quality is lost from this point on, no matter how many times the PNG is edited and re-saved.
Why would I convert JPG to PNG then?
Three real reasons. Some upload forms, print shops and legacy systems only accept PNG. Some editing workflows require lossless input so repeated saves do not degrade the image further; editing a JPG and re-saving it as JPG loses a little quality every round. And PNG is the base you want before adding transparency or precise graphics on top of a photo.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than my JPG?
Because PNG stores the decoded pixels losslessly. A 500 KB JPG can easily become a 3 to 5 MB PNG; that is expected, not a bug. The size badge on each row shows the growth. If the goal was a smaller file rather than a lossless one, you wanted the opposite conversion: JPG stays, or convert to WebP.
Can I get transparency by converting JPG to PNG?
The format will support transparency, but the image will not gain any: a JPG has a pixel in every position, so the converted PNG is fully opaque. Cutting the background out is an editing task, not a conversion; do the conversion here, then remove the background in an editor that can select and erase it.
Is the conversion private?
Fully. Your browser decodes the JPG and writes the PNG on your own device; no image data is uploaded, logged or stored anywhere. It also strips EXIF metadata, including GPS location, from the output.
