Etsy math is a base problem
Etsy's percentages are simple; what trips sellers is which dollars each applies to. Gift wrap joins the transaction-fee base; US sales tax does not, but does join the processing base; shipping joins both. Multi-quantity listings quietly add $0.20 renewals per unit sold. This calculator keeps the components separate, shows both bases side by side in the waterfall, and states the result as contribution profit after entered costs, with everything excluded listed, because Etsy Ads (onsite), VAT on fees outside the US, and your packaging time are not in any fee table.
Etsy fees FAQ
What fees does Etsy charge per sale?
Three to four components, each on its own base: the $0.20 listing fee (charged at publish/renewal), the 6.5% transaction fee on item + shipping + gift wrap with US sales tax excluded, Etsy Payments processing at 3% + $0.25 on the TOTAL including tax and shipping, and, when the sale came from an Offsite Ad, 15% (or 12% for qualified larger shops) capped at $100 per order. This calculator itemizes each with its base shown.
Why does sales tax change my processing fee but not my transaction fee?
Because that is how Etsy defines the bases: the US transaction fee explicitly excludes sales tax, while Etsy Payments processing is assessed on the total sale including tax and shipping. On a $50 order with $5 tax, the 6.5% applies to $50-plus-shipping while the 3% applies to the tax-included total. A calculator with one base gets one of these wrong on every taxed order.
How should I count the $0.20 listing fee?
It depends on the question you are asking, so the calculator offers three allocations: include one listing fee (the common case), count renewals per unit for multi-quantity listings (each sold unit triggers a renewal), or exclude it as a sunk cost when the listing is already paid for and you are deciding on the marginal sale. The cash fee and the marginal decision cost are different numbers; pick the one your decision needs.
When is the Offsite Ads fee 15% versus 12%?
15% is standard; shops that made $10,000 or more in the prior 365 days qualify for 12% (and mandatory participation). It applies only to orders attributed to an Offsite Ad, is charged on the order amount, and is capped at $100 per order, which the calculator enforces. Sales not attributed to Offsite Ads pay nothing.
