DevDome vs Matomo: Data Ownership or Zero Maintenance?

Matomo gives you every report and full data ownership, if you maintain it. DevDome gives you fewer numbers, no server to run, and a visible split between humans and bots.

We make DevDome Analytics, one of the two products compared here, so we have a commercial interest in it. Matomo facts come from Matomo's own documentation and its WordPress.org listing, linked in Sources, and we name what Matomo does better than we do. Corrections are welcome.

The short version

Last reviewed October 2, 2026. The full comparison explains each point with sources.

  • Matomo wins on data ownership and depth: self-host it free forever and get close to Google Analytics report coverage.
  • That depth has a running cost: PHP, a database, archiving, updates and a table that keeps growing inside your site.
  • Matomo can be configured to run cookieless, but that is a setting rather than the default.
  • DevDome is cookieless by default with nothing to maintain, and it reports the human versus bot split across six signals.
  • DevDome meters plans on human pageviews only, so bot traffic never counts against your allowance.
